The genus Acipenser is found in the fish family Acipenseridae - the sturgeon family.

Sturgeon are ancient-looking fishes, long and slender with hard, bony plates called scutes.  They are generally bottom feeders and have a tubular, extensible mouth.  Unfortunately, the worldwide stocks of sturgeons are dwindling because of dams, pollution, and exploitation.

The particular fish that this design was made from was a juvenile Lake Sturgeon, Acipenser fulvescens.  Annually, in our home state of Wisconsin, the Riveredge Nature Center of Newburg grows sturgeon for re-introduction into the Milwaukee River system and Lake Michigan.  The photo we designed this shirt from was of a juvenile that we were fortunate enough to be able to release into the Milwaukee River.  This is a Great-Lakes region native species.
