The genus Culaea is found in the fish family Gasterosteidae - the stickleback family.
Sticklebacks are small fishes, normally only a few inches in length. They are generally midwater-water feeders and like to live among aquatic vegetation or debris.
The particular fish that this design was made from was a Brook Stickleback, Culaea inconstans. One of only two native stickleback species in our home state of Wisconsin, the entire native range of this species in the wild is primarily the north-central United States and most of Canada. There, they prefer the slackwater areas of rivers and streams. This is a Great-Lakes region native species.
The design for this shirt was created from making a silhouette of a Brook Stickleback from a photo we took of the species.
