The genus Etheostoma is found in the fish family Percidae - the perch family.

Darters are small fishes, normally only a few inches in length.  They are generally fast-water dwelling species and like to live in waters with high flow and oxygen levels.

The particular fish that this design was made from was a Johnny Darter, Etheostoma nigrum.  One of only 15 native darter species in our home state of Wisconsin, the native range of this species in the wild is primarily 50% of the United States and Canada, east of the Rocky Mountains.  There, they prefer the moving waters of rivers and streams, though they can sometimes be found in lakes.  This is a Great-Lakes region native species and is the most abundant darter species in Wisconsin.

The design for this shirt was created from making a silhouette of a Johnny Darter from a photo we took of the species.
