The genus Percina is found in the fish family Percidae - the perch family. It is the second-most diverse fish family in North America, after the minnows (Cyprinidae).
Darters of this genus are generally small fishes, than 4 inches in length. They live in many aquatic habitats, from streams and rivers to lakes and ponds.
The particular fish that this design was made from was a Logperch, Percina caprodes. Unusual for this genus, Logperch can get up to 7.25 inches in length. The native range of this species in the wild covers much of the United States, and neighboring Canada, east of the Rocky Mountains. They are found in the St. Lawrence-Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and Mississippi River drainage basins. This is a Great-Lakes region native species.
