The genus Crystallaria is found in the fish family Percidae - the perch family. It is the second-most diverse fish family in North America, after the minnows (Cyprinidae).
Darters of this genus are generally small fishes, ranging between 3.5 and 6.25 inches in length. They live in clean sand and gravel runs of small to medium-sized rivers.
The particular fish that this design was made from was a Crystal Darter, Crystallaria asprella. Crystal Darters can get up to 6.25 inches in length. The native range of this species in the wild falls in disjunct areas of the Mississippi River basin in the United States, as well as other small river basins that drain into the Gulf of Mexico.
